Digital signage continues to become every more present in our daily lives. These are the screens we see at the airport showing flight information, the screen in the back of NYC taxi cabs and the screens we look at while riding in an elevator.
The applications of digital signage are far reaching so I have decided to start a blog that documents the digital signage I come across in my daily travels. Below are some photographs I took on a recent trip to the movies with my wife to see Les Miserables. By the way, if you loved the Broadway show, you will love the film.
Anyway, back to the digital signage. This is a great use of digital signage to provide customers with relevant information, in this case, movie show times and duration, that is easily updatable. I didn’t have a chance to find out what they were using but if you look closely, you can see what appears to be the menu and controls of a windows-based application. My best guess is they are using a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation on a desktop Windows PC that is connected to the screen via a VGA connection.
For businesses looking in incorporate digital signage without a significant financial investment, this is a great way to go about it. In most cases, you already have the computer and the software. So for the cost of a 20′ VGA cable, a display and mount you have a digital menu board. Most likely this solution cost under $1,000.
